Your Complete Guide to Bram Fischer International Airport (BFN)
Bram Fischer International Airport — still very widely known as Bloemfontein Airport — sits approximately 10–15 km north-east of Bloemfontein’s city centre, in the Free State’s Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality. As a regional airport handling roughly 400,000 passengers a year, BFN offers a deliberately compact, single-terminal experience that stands in sharp contrast to the scale of OR Tambo or Cape Town International.
The Terminal Building
BFN operates a single terminal handling all check-in, security, baggage reclaim and boarding for its entirely domestic flight schedule. Dining and most shops are located on the ground floor of the terminal building, with the airside boarding area immediately beyond security. The terminal’s compact size means short walking distances throughout — there’s no need to navigate between separate buildings or take a shuttle bus to your gate.
Key Facilities at BFN
Restaurants and food: Mugg & Bean is the airport’s confirmed sit-down restaurant, alongside Sweets from Heaven for road trip snacks and quick bites.
The lounge: A single commercial facility, the Bidvest Premier Lounge, located airside on the right-hand side at the end of the passage after security. Open to any passenger for a flat daily rate — no airline restriction. See our lounge guide for current rates and what’s included.
Shops: A small but practical retail offering, including Vodashop Rent a Fone for SIM cards and connectivity, plus a tourist information desk.
Wi-Fi: Free ACSA Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, with a complimentary session of approximately 4 hours.
Car hire: More than 11 companies operate at BFN, including Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Budget, Sixt, First Car Rental, Tempest, Thrifty, Bidvest and Woodford Exclusive Rentals — an unusually large selection for a regional airport. See our car hire guide.
Medical and other services: Basic first-aid assistance is available via the information desk. A small multi-faith prayer room is located just before security, offering a quiet space for reflection. Notably, BFN also has a fully-fledged Busamed Hospital on its grounds — a distinctive feature among South African regional airports.
ATMs: Available at several key locations throughout the terminal.
